Key Responsibilities
Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification: Conduct regular site inspections, identify potential hazards (e.g., chemical, electrical, or ergonomic risks), and perform risk assessments to mitigate dangers.
Compliance and Policy Implementation: Ensure adherence to local and international safety regulations (e.g., OSHA in the US, HSE in the UK, or ISO 45001 standards). Develop, update, and enforce company safety policies and procedures.
Training and Awareness: Design and deliver safety training programs for employees, contractors, and management. Promote a culture of safety through toolbox talks, drills, and awareness campaigns.
Incident Investigation and Reporting: Investigate accidents, near-misses, and incidents; prepare reports; and recommend corrective actions. Maintain records for audits and legal compliance.
Emergency Preparedness: Develop and test emergency response plans, including fire drills, evacuation procedures, and environmental spill response.
Environmental Management: Monitor environmental impacts (e.g., waste disposal, emissions) and ensure compliance with environmental laws like EPA regulations.
Audits and Reporting: Perform internal and external audits; prepare HSE reports for management; and collaborate with teams to integrate safety into daily operations.
Liaison Role: Act as the point of contact for regulatory bodies, insurers, and suppliers regarding safety matters.
Required Qualifications and Education
Education: Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field. A diploma or certification in HSE is often sufficient for entry-level roles.
Certifications (Highly Preferred or Mandatory):
NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) or Diploma.
IOSH Managing Safely or Working Safely.
OSHA 30-Hour General Industry or Construction Safety Certification (US-focused).
ISO 14001 or 45001 Lead Auditor certification for environmental/safety management.
First Aid/CPR certification and fire safety training.
Experience: 3–5+ years in HSE roles, preferably in a relevant industry. Entry-level positions may accept 1–2 years with strong certifications. Experience with high-risk environments (e.g., construction sites or refineries) is a plus.
Essential Skills and Competencies
Technical Skills: In-depth knowledge of safety regulations, risk management tools (e.g., HAZOP, JSA), and software like incident reporting systems (e.g., Cority or Intelex).
Soft Skills: Strong communication (verbal and written) for training and reporting; analytical thinking for root-cause analysis; attention to detail; and leadership to influence safety behaviors.
Other Attributes: Ability to work under pressure, travel to sites if needed, and handle confidential information. Physical fitness for site inspections.
Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Excel for data analysis, PowerPoint for presentations) and HSE-specific tools.
